Having had the opportunity to use the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max for a couple of months, I have a reliable basis to offer my review. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is without a doubt one of the best smartphones in the market today, highlighted by a sturdy stainless steel frame and a classy ceramic shield front cover providing excellent durability.

One of the defining features of this model is its 6.7-inch, HDR10 Super Retina XDR display. This is Apple’s biggest ever, and aside from watching movies or playing games, it’s also perfect for those who wish to multitask. Given its size, one-handed operation might require some adjustment, but fashioning a bold, big phone that’s still chic and classy is one of many things Apple does well.

In the absence of bright sunlight, the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera offers outstanding images. The phone’s night mode operation delivers fairly clear and detailed images even in low-light conditions. The Night mode portraits appear more clear and get more light. The phone’s LiDAR feature helps in detecting the depth, which enhances AR applications and provides better autofocus in low light. However, if you’re shooting in inherently bright conditions, the 12 Pro Max doesn’t perform markedly better than the standard iPhone 12.

The crown jewel of the Pro Max’s camera ensemble is the telephoto lens, offering up to 2.5x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, 5x optical zoom range and digital zoom up to 12x. Although high-end competitors, like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, promise even more zoom, Apple’s camera zoom maintains image quality better at maximum capacity.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max runs on the robust A14 Bionic chip supported by 6GB RAM, making the phone delightfully swift and responsive. Given the phone’s anaemic 3687 mAh battery for its size, the overall battery life is commendable. However, the caveat here is that you may have to opt for more frequent charges if you are comfortable with intense gaming and media consumption.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6, promising the highest internet speeds that are currently available. However, real-world use will largely depend on whether 5G is available in your area or not.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an Apple smartphone presenting the most lavish features, then the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a straightforward choice. It surely is the most capable iPhone of the year with its absolute best camera system, extensive display, and long battery life. Given these premium features, the phone also resides on the expensive side of the market. Lastly, if you have small hands or pockets, you may want to consider the smaller and slightly less expensive iPhone 12 Pro instead.

Thus, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max earns a stellar 4.5/5 rating for its superior performance and camera quality, albeit at a lofty price.
